HISTORY OF KAMGBUNLI

Kamgbunli was founded in the early 1960s by my late father, Alhaji Nuhu Dawuda Abekah, in whose memory this healthcare Centre is established.

Alhaji Nuhu was a Clergyman and a visionary leader who in his pursuit to have the freedom to practice his faith in a more serene environment decided to relocate to the current town of Kamgbunli, after his father, Dawuda Abekah had initially moved his entire family from Ampain to Kamgbunli Suadebazo (Old Town), so they could lead a quiet and peaceful life to avoid the temptation of his family going astray, after he reverted to Islam.

Kamgbunli, located about 15 miles from Axim in the Nzema East District of Ghana’s Western Region along the Atlantic Ocean, has grown into a sprawling farming community with Kindergarten, Primary, Junior High and Senior High Schools. Kamgbunli has a population of around 5,000 people. However, due to the community’s great poverty, proper healthcare facilities are lacking. Axim, which is 15 miles away has the sole District Hospital in the entire area that is close to this town.

Kamgbunli is about 156 miles (251 kilometers) away from Ghana’s capital city of Accra and only about 23 miles (37 kilometers) from the Ghana’s border with Côte d’Ivoire. As a result of the West African international trunk route passing through the town. it is conveniently accessible.

Kamgbunli is endowed with a diverse range of scenery and is home to some of West Africa’s most calm, hospitable, and friendly people. Kamgbunli is Ghana`s only town occupied solely by Muslims. It is one-of-a-kind community because of its unity and peaceful coexistence of its residents.

The town is known for its good hospitality, discipline, clean environment, spicy and variety of  foods, many Muslim Scholars, especially the Holy Imam, custodian and former Western Regional Chief Imam, His Highest Eminence, Waliu`llah Alhaji Nuhu Dawuda (May Allah’s Mercy be Upon Him), beautiful Mosques, and  beautiful and descent ladies.

In recent years, the town has also evolved as a center for scientific,  information technology, engineering and mathematics education, as well as Islamic religious training for students in the diaspora. The Uthman Bin Affan Islamic Senior High School which is located in Kamgbunli is the sole Islamic Senior High School in Ghana’s Western Region.  The school has become one of the most popular senior high schools in the region due to its highly disciplined and good academic record.

Muslims of Kamgbunli celebrate their annual Eid festivities with religious fervor and gaiety. The prominent Aiyinasi Market near the town witnesses an unprecedented swarm of Muslim customers, including women dressed in gorgeous and bright black veils purchasing new clothes for the celebration.

Shops selling goods primarily for these celebrations and dress materials place their merchandise on display to attract these customers. Every year, Kamgbunli inhabitants in the diaspora return home, together with hundreds of Muslims from neighboring towns, to offer congregational Eid prayers in the town’s main park.
